Introduction

This biography of James Harvey SIavens and Louisa Amanda Slavens was written for the information, especially of our children and grandchildren.

I hope that it may be informative and interesting to them in future years as well as to other relatives who may read it.

I am under obligation to a relative, Mr. James H. Slavens of Kansas City, Missouri, now deceased, for valuable information as to the first known ancestor of the Slavens’ family in America and his descendants.

Also to my cousin, William D. Massey of Springfield, Missouri, for important facts and dates pertaining to the early life of our grandfather, Joseph Rountree, and his family.

The events in the life of James Hervey and Louisa Amanda Slavens, hereafter related, were told to me by them during their lifetime.

The narration of later events, I have given from remembrance of the same as they transpired under my personal observation.
