Pit Explosions-- Two explosions of fire-damp took place at Chapelhall on Monday-- one in No. 3 coal-pit and the other in No. 4. In the former case a man named John Brown, who had been working with a naked lamp, was burned pretty severely, The explosion in the other pit was of a more serious kind-the inflammable gas, rushing from a crevice in the roof, having ignited, and dangerously burned three men, named Peter Baird, Patrick Slaven, and John O'Donnell.
