Last evening a rough character giving his name as Edward Slavin was arrested, charged with larceny from the person. It is claimed that one night about seven o'clock he met an elderly man named Thomas Smith, on Gorham street, where he stopped him and demanded money. Mr. Smith not complying, says he was assaulted by Slavin, who prostrated him and then took about seven dollars from his pocket, and left. The old man was badly bruised and was confined to the house to yesterday, when he stated the case to the police, with the result above-named. Slavin was ordered in $1000 to the superior court.
