On the wall of the Hill Fire Patrol office in Sweet Home hangs a relic of days gone by. It's a 45 muzzleloading rifle, with powder horn and charger, bullet and patch pouch and the moulds for making the bullets.
The original owner of the gun was George Slavens, father of the last George Slavens of Crawfordsville, and Henry Slavens of Coburg. George Slavens lived then where Roy Keiser now lives.
Seventy years ago this gun with its owner made many a trip on Green Mountain where it laid low many a magnificent buck. -- Sweet Home New Era
