A Step in the Right Direction.

As will be seen in our report of the proceedings at the County Sessions yesterday, John Slavin was tried and convicted of highway robbery. Judge Clute, in pronouncing the sentence of the Court, gave warning that, in consequence of the increase of that crime in our city, the severest punishment the law permits, twenty years imprisonment, would be the sentence of all convicted of that crime hereafter. The jury having recommended the prisoner to the mercy of the Court, he was sentenced to Clinton State Prison for fifteen years.
