Mr. Ed Slaven, who lives in Bloomfield township, a few miles south of Commerce, dropped dead in his chair Saturday night, from heart disease. He had just returned from Des Moines and seated himself at the supper table, apparently in as good health as ever, when the dread messenger came to him without warning. The funeral took place yesterday from St. Ambrose church, and was largely attended. Mr. Slaven was well known in Des Moines, having resided here many years. He was a railroad conductor of considerable note. He was about 50 years of age at the time of his death.

Daily State Leader (Des Moines, Iowa), January 15, 1884.

(Note: Edward's cemetery monument uses the SLEVIN spelling, so we are indexing it under Slevin but retaining the newspaper's spelling here.)
