My name is Tim Slavin. I am a Circuit Judge living in Northwest Illinois. My sister emailed me the link to this site, and, given that I am in the midst of applying for Irish citizenship through The Registry of Foreign Births, it piqued my interest, and thought I would add to your fledging site in the hopes your attempt to pull in Slevin geneology would grow and grow.
My great, great grandfather was Bernard Slevin from Cloger, County Tyrone. He married Susan McCann of the same locale. They produced 11 children. The oldest was my great grandfather, Arthur. Among the other offspring, 8 of them migrated to Woodland, California- sometime, I believe, in the 1880s. One of those was named Michael (b. 1852) who begat John (b. 1898) whose issue were Rita (b. 1925), Jack (b. 1926), Bill (b. 1929) and Florence (b. 1932). The only children of those folks for whom I know a name is Bill' son, Michael.
Anyway, of the 3 who did not find their way to the Golden State, Bridgett moved to England, Bernard stayed on the Old Sod, and my great grandfather, Arthur, came to Rochester, New York, by way, family lore has it, of Canada. His citizenship paper, issued in 1894, spelled his surname "Slaven" which is the same spelling now used by the California branch of his brothers who settled there.
Arthur had married Molly Teague in 1857 in the parish of Dromore before his passage to the United States. Their union produced 8 offspring- all, I think, born in Eire: Susannah & Edward (twins, who passed away at 6 weeks of whooping cough); Bernard ("Barney", b. 1871) who later became a horticulturist of some reknown, propagating numerous species (many bearing the "Slavin" name) including the Ascending Elm used extensively in the earlier part of the last century to line boulevards in many cities throughout the land: Patrick (my grandfather, b. 1879) who became the Director of Parks in Rochester from a beginning as a waterboy and started the festival known as "Lilac Days" in that city.; Ellen (b. 1867); Margaret (b. 1869); John (b. 1878); Mary (b. 1882).
The writing on the birth certificate of Patrick's last name for his first born, Howard, is darkened around where the letter "e" should be and is made into an "a", hence, I surmise, the change to the spelling of my last name, "Slavin."
Patrick married Bertha Gerlach in Rochester. they had 4 kids: Howard (b. 1908 d. circa 1984), Ruth (b. circa 1912), Evelyn (b. 1916) and my father, James (b. 1917, d. 2001).
Howard had 4 kids as well: Sarah, Patrick "Petey", Martha "Duffy" now McHugh (Robert) and Rebecca "Becky" now Bronfenbrenner (Jim). Ruth married Bill Yaeger, and they were childless. Evelyn married the postmaster of Webster, NY, Bill Coon, and they had 4 as well: Ellen, Frankie, Marty and one whose name I can't seem to remeber as I write this message. Lastly, my Dad joined Jean Mealey of Greenwich, New York in marriage in 1949. They moved to Illinois with GE in 1950 where I was born in 1951 along with my sister, Penny (b. 1954). My wife, Ann Blackwell Slavin (Moline, IL) and I have 2 daughters, Molly (b. 1987) and Maggie (b. 1990). Penny has a daughter, Kelly (b. 1990), with her husband, Bill Carney,of Maine.
I can easily gather some other info of recent generations and their progeny. The rest I have intended to leave for retirement and the good offices of others.
Has anyone out there anything to add or spice up the foregoing?
