The dwelling house of John Slavens, near Dayton in Columbia county, burned last Wednesday. Mr. Slavens thinks the fire started above the ceiling and caught from a stovepipe. When he retired there was a little fire in the stove. He was awakened by pieces of the ceiling dropping on the floor. When he got out of the window with his trunk the roof was all ablaze. The house was insured for $350.
