A young man, Eugene John Slavin, was charged at the Central Police Court with stealing two purses. He was arrested yesterday by Constable Nichols in a lane off Bathurst-street while counting the money in the purses, which amounted to 23s 6d. They were subsequently identified as the property of a restaurant-keeper in Bathurst-street, at whose place Slavin had lodged for the night. Accused, who has already served a sentence of two months this year for a similar offence, was sent to gaol for four months.
