The 1766 Religious Census for some County Tyrone Parishes.

"The 1766 religious returns provide for several parishes in all parts of the country the only lists approximating to a census of their eighteenth century inhabitants which we now possess. They were compiled by the local Protestant incumbents, and were based, it would seem, on the lists of tithe-payers in each parish. Hence they include only heads of houses, and in some parishes at least they omit the very poor...

"The 1766 returns were made to the House of Lords by order of the Irish Parliament. The documents from the different parishes ultimately found their way to the Public Record Office, Dublin and perished in its destruction in 1922. Before that date copies of many of them had been made by the late Tenison Groves and are now in the Library of the Representative Church Body, St. Stephen's Green, Dublin. The text below is based on these copies."
