Offered Counterfeit Bill.

Two Men Ran When Woman Examined Spurious Note.

James Doody, 34 years old, of Hope street and Marcy avenue, and Hugh Slavin, 23 years old, of 227 Broadway, who claim to be peddlers, were prisoners before Magistrate Bristow, in the Manhattan avenue police court, this morning, charged with attempting to pass counterfeit money. The arrest of the men was due to Mrs. Leslie Schraumm, the wife of a saloon keeper, at 21 Olive street. She was serving customers during the absence of her husband last night when the two men entered. They ordered beer and tendered in payment a five dollar bill. It was such a bad counterfeit that the woman had no trouble detecting it. When the men discovered that she suspected the bill was bad they ran from the place. She followed and her shouts attracted Policemen Schmitt and Shea of the Herbert street station, who arrested the men, after pursuing them for several blocks.

When arraigned in court this morning they pleaded that they had received the bill during the day and were not aware it was spurious. When the bill was produced Magistrate Bristow, after examining it, expressed the opinion that any man who accepted such a bill should be sent to jail. they were remanded for examination.
