The Late Assualt on the Union Race Course.

Daniel Slavin, alias Aster, was arrested yesterday by officer Mershon of the 11th precinct police, on the charge of felonious assualt. The accused was the accomplice of Bryan Riley in the assault upon an old farmer named John Holland, residing in Queen's County, upon the Union Race Course, some two months since. Riley is now in prison awaiting trial. Slavin was sent to Jamaica, Queen's county, for trail, and there is no doubt but that both parties will receive their deserts; something that would be very hard to accomplish in the city, especially before an important election.

Arrest of a Desperado

In the early part of August, it will be remembered, Mr. John Holland, of this village, was badly and almost fatally beaten by some rowdies while near the Union Course, this town, and that one of them named Riley was arrested in New York and brought to this village, where an examination was held and he was committed to the Court House for trial. At that time the rest of the party, and especially one of its principals, escaped from the city and could not be found at the time. The excitement having somewhat subsided the rascal was more bold than he had been, and returned home to his old haunts again. On Wednesday last, Officer Mershon of the Eleventh Precinct, arrested Daniel Slaven alias Astor, as one of the parties, and on Thursday brought him to this village and placed him in the cells. Astor was visited, while confined, by John Holland, and he (the prisoner) acknowledged having beat him (Holland) with the whip, and identified Mr. H. as the man he beat. The prisoner waived an examination before a Justice and was taken to the Court House on Saturday to await the action of the Grand Jury, which will meet on Monday.--L.I. Farmer, Jamaica.
