Came to Grief at Freeport.

Freeport, L.I., September 28-- Yesterday morning about 10:30 o'clock, a party composed of Joseph A. Phelan, 379 Putnam avenue, Brooklyn; Eugene Quackenbos, 288 Keap street, Brooklyn; Edward R. Welling, 307 Hancock street, Brooklyn; William J. Duane, 59 McDonough street, Brooklyn, and Anthony Slavin, as coachman, started for Hempstead, L.I. with a rig, which they hired from J. Carney, 1,830 Fulton street, Brooklyn, to visit a friend. They had two kegs of beer with them and they imbibed quite freely. At their arrival in this place they stopped near the Presbyterian church and used profane language, howling, yelling, fighting, calling names at the church people as they were passing by on their way to church at 7:30 P.M. Village officers Dunbar and Rider arrested the whole party. Most of the crowd resisted arrest and had to be taken by main force. The prisoners were arraigned before Justice Seaman of Wantagh, who discharged Slavin, the driver, and sentenced Phelan to 90 days in the county jail and the others 30 each.
